Why is it important to understand your personality?
Personality is one of three elements that make up our psychological makeup.
The elements are:
Personality- The characteristics of thoughts, feelings & behaviours that make a person unique
Intellect-the faculty of reasoning and understanding objectively, especially with regard to abstract matters
Emotional Intelligence- is the ability to perceive, manage, and regulate emotions.
All three elements interact independently as well as together to solve problems. You can be high in intellect and still relatively low in emotional intelligence. Personality and Intellect, do not predict EQ (Emotional intelligence).
"Personality is a mask you believe in" -Dr.White
Our personalities are relatively fixed in adulthood. Your personality is the way you express yourself and communicate who you are with others. Personalities are characterized in terms of traits, which are relatively enduring characteristics that influence our behaviour across many situations. Personality traits such as introversion, friendliness, conscientiousness, honesty, and helpfulness are important because they help explain consistencies in behaviour.
Our values, beliefs and expectations are all communicated through our personality. We show it in our clothes, in our body language, the language we use and even how we greet people. How we acquire these values, beliefs and expectations is due more to how we socialise.
Even though our personalities are more a “fixed” element, we can still develop our personalities to help us stand out. When we learn how to express ourselves in a more authentic way we can improve our communication skills. It will allow you to control the positive characteristics of your personality. You will be able to know where you belong and what you need to do to be successful whether in academics, relationship, finance, and life.
"Find your why and you find your way" -John C. Maxwell
Our personalities help to form our “why”. The reason I need to stay organized and why my partner simply does not see the clutter can be found in our personalities. We all have different ways of expressing ourselves and it can sometimes be hard to understand why someone else is thinking and feeling differently about the same thing as you. We can use this information we are learning about ourselves to express our intentions more clearly to others around us.
Understanding your personality type can help you:
Understand your strengths and weaknesses
Identify your likes and dislikes
Have deeper and more meaningful relationships
Being aware of your personality type helps you to be more aware of other personality types around you.
